Meet Team Cannon
September 20, 2019
Some say curling is Canada’s sport and we agree! We love curling and this season, we are sponsoring Team Cannon, an incredible Manitoba-grown team. To help you get to know this team a bit better, we asked them a few questions about their time curling and what they love about the sport.
How long have you all been curling for?
Raunora, lead: 31 years
Vanessa, second: 29 years
Karen, third: 35 years
Theresa, skip: 20 years
Howard, coach: 55 years
What’s your favourite part of curling?
Vanessa: I love the competitive aspect, but I also love the camaraderie. Being part of a team, setting goals, and working together to achieve them is incredibly motivating (and a lot of fun!).
Raunora: Curling has allowed me to become better at setting goals, pushing my mental and physical limits, and has allowed me to travel the world while meeting other competitors in the sport.
Theresa: I enjoy the friendships made through curling. I still hang out with people I played with in juniors.
Who’s the most inspiring person in the sport?
Vanessa: I really admire all those athletes who give up so much to chase their dreams. It’s not really a sport where you can make a living doing it, so it’s a constant juggle between work commitments, family, and balancing the demands of the sport (travel, training, practice, etc.). There’s a lot more that goes into playing at a competitive level than meets the eye.
Howard: For me, Bill Jackson. He ran our junior program. He selflessly gave his time and weekends for the juniors!
Karen: The most inspiring people to me are the underdogs, the grinders that truly love the sport, work extra hard to get better, and play for the joy of the game.
What would you say to someone looking to get into curling now?
Raunora: I would tell anyone thinking about trying curling that it’s never too late to start. It’s such a great social activity and it’s inexpensive where you don’t need to invest in a lot of equipment to start. The Granite Curling Club started hosting a Sunday night drop-in. It can be a great intro to curling with instruction and games. I’ve coached the beginners throughout the season over the last few years. It’s a popular evening!
Howard: I would tell them to get involved, no matter their age. It is a sport that you can play all of your life and the people you meet are fantastic.
Theresa: Mixed doubles is really fun and fast-paced. People interested in curling should try that out.
Karen: Curling is awesome! It can be played by anyone at any age and at any level. Where you go in the game is up to you and how much time and work you want to put into it.
