investing 101

A term deposit or guaranteed investment certificate (GIC) is a low-risk and secure investment that guarantees 100% of the original amount that you invested while earning interest over a fixed period of time. Wow… that was a mouth full. Let’s see if we can clear that up a bit!

Our term deposits (or GICs) are investments where the principal (the original amount you invested) as well as the interest payments are guaranteed. They are safe and secure, offer a pretty competitive interest rate, and give you some flexibility in choosing the term length and interest payment frequencies you’d like. At Sunova we offer a number of term investments to choose from. These range from one year to seven year terms and are great options if you do not need immediate access to your funds and want to earn an even higher interest rate on your savings. As an alternative to locking your funds into a term deposit, we offer a higher interest rate on your savings account no matter what your balance and without incurring massive service fees. That way, you can still save, earn a higher rate of return, and have access to your money whenever you need it.

If you are looking for a short term GIC, make sure to check out the information on our Superior Savings account to see if that might be a good fit instead. All of our term deposits and savings are 100% guaranteed by the Deposit Guarantee Corporation of Manitoba. Basically, what that means is your deposits are secure as the Deposit Guarantee Corporation of Manitoba provides an unlimited guarantee on all deposits, including accrued interest to the date of payout. Pretty cool, hey?

In case you need it, here’s a brief recap of our terms:
  • One to seven year terms (click here to view our available terms and interest rates) available.
  • Interest calculated daily and paid annually (this can compound or be paid out annually).
