Things to do in Manitoba and ways to support your community
May 07, 2020
What a month it has been. Although our world is slowly moving back towards normal, it’s going to be a while until we get there. Through these tough times, we have been blown away by the support and kindness of organizations in our communities and how different groups have embraced the times and made changes as needed. We’ve put together this list of things to do in Manitoba from local organizations. They are all things you can do while keeping a safe distance from others.
Things to do in Manitoba
Shameless Circle
The Shameless Circle is a volunteer-led healing circle for women aimed to end the stigma around shaming women for standing up for themselves and their children. While they aren’t able to run workshops or events in person right now, Shameless Circle is running a weekly chat and check in on zoom, and other programs. Check out Shameless Circle on Facebook for an up-to-date list on the events.
Green Acres Art Centre
Based in Teulon, the Green Acres Art Centre has created a special Facebook group called Together While We’re Apart. It is a supportive space for community members to share their art, and access fun resources.
Surefire Fitness Online Workouts
Kate at Surefire Fitness is helping us keep active with her online FortiFIRE classes. FortiFIRE is like a boot camp class, but with more motivation and inspiration to move forward. Kate has adapted the classes so you don’t need to have equipment at home, which is awesome. These classes are paid, but if you want to test one out, Surefire Fitness if offering 1 class free if you mentioned you saw this post. How cool is that?!
Whitemouth River Recreation Commission Inc
This is one activity that was always socially-distanced approved. Geocaching is for all ages and something you can do all over the world! The Whitemouth River Recreation Commission created some of its own geocaches along The Whitemouth River Recreation Trail. To make a free account and find some geocaches near you go to www.geocaching.com.
A few ways to give back
While it’s nice to keep busy during this time, there is no doubt that there are a lot of organizations and people in need right now. Below are two initiatives we’ve heard about and have recently supported. If you’re looking for a way to give back, check out these groups below.
1JustCity – community lunches
1JustCity is non-profit based in Winnipeg that actively loves and supports the underloved within the community. During this pandemic, 1JustCity is continuing to serve Winnipeg’s most vulnerable people at three locations. These are a few of the services they are providing at this time:
- Take out lunches (1500 a week!)
- Port-a-potty access
- Emergency food kits
- Sleep space for 30 people
To show our support, we recently purchased 25 emergency food kits for 1JustCity to give out for Mother’s Day from the I Am Love Project and Freshii. Along with the food kits, we’re gifting the families a bracelet from I Am Love Project.
If you’re looking for a way to give back, 1JustCity needs fruit, fruit cups, granola bars and easy-to-go items. Or you can make a donation to help 1JustCity purchase more supplies.
Hampers from schools
The Lord Selkirk School Division is providing hampers for about 70 families whose students used the breakfast and lunch program while in school. They are also providing a hot meal on Fridays, delivered to families. Educational assistants were helping run this program, but with layoffs coming to the schools our staff from Selkirk will be stepping in to help pack up hampers later in May.
We have redirected funds from a cancelled sponsorship to help the school continue this program as well.
